What the problem looks like

Signs you're dealing with this

The door is crooked or wedged

One side has dropped and the panels sit at an angle. A door off its track can bind, jam, or fall, keep clear of it until it's fixed.

You see a frayed or dangling cable

Lift cables run down each side of the door. Rust, fraying, or a cable hanging loose means it's failing or already snapped.

The door slammed or dropped suddenly

A cable that lets go on one side can drop that corner fast. If your door came down hard, stop using it.

Rollers have popped out of the track

After an impact or a broken spring, rollers can jump the track and the door loses its guide.

What's included

What you get

  • Inspection of both lift cables, drums, rollers, and track alignment
  • Safe reset of the door onto its tracks under controlled tension
  • Replacement of frayed or snapped cables in matched pairs
  • Track straightening or re-securing where it has bent or pulled loose
  • Cycle testing and lubrication of the corrected hardware

How we do it

Our process

STEP 01

Secure the door

Before anything else we lock the door in a safe position and relieve the spring tension so the cables and rollers can be worked on without the door moving.

STEP 02

Reset and inspect

We guide the rollers back into the track, check the track for bends, and confirm the drums are seated and wound evenly on both sides.

STEP 03

Replace the cables

Cables are replaced as a pair and sized to the door weight so both sides carry the same load, a mismatched cable is what pulls a door crooked again.

STEP 04

Re-tension and test

We reset the drum tension, level the door, and run it through several cycles to confirm it tracks straight and stops square.

Parts & materials

  • Galvanized aircraft-grade lift cable, seven strands of nineteen wires each (133 wires in all), matched to your door's weight
  • Replacement rollers and track fasteners as needed
  • Drum and bearing replacement where wear is found

What affects cost

Cost depends on whether you need cables, rollers, track work, or a combination, and on the door's weight. If a broken spring caused the cable to fail, we'll address both. You get a written estimate before we start.

Safety note

A door off its track is under uneven load and can fall. Don't force it up or down with the opener, that usually makes the damage worse and can be dangerous.

Questions

Cable & Off-Track Repair FAQ

Why did my cable snap?

Usually one of three reasons: age and rust wearing the strands, a broken spring shock-loading the cable, or the cable fraying against a worn drum. We look for the cause so it doesn't happen again in a month.

Is a door off its track dangerous?

Yes. The weight is no longer evenly supported, so the door can bind or drop. Leave it where it is, keep people and cars from underneath it, and don't run the opener.

Can you fix the track or does it need replacing?

Minor bends can often be straightened and re-secured. A track that's badly kinked or torn from the wall is replaced, we'll show you which it is before deciding.

Do cables always get replaced in pairs?

We recommend it. Both cables see the same wear, so replacing the pair avoids the second one failing right after, and keeps the door pulling evenly.

How fast can you come out?

We offer same-day service for cable and off-track calls because they're a safety issue. Repairs are scheduled inside a two-hour window so you're not waiting all day.
