Cables/Off-Track Door
Depending on your situation a cable failure can be one of the scariest looking garage door repairs that can occur. If one cable fails, this can cause the door to go crooked and can sometimes cause the track to bend &/or a panel can fall out of the track. If this occurs don’t panic, the likelihood of the entire garage door falling off onto your car is low as long as you leave it alone and call a professional to come and guide your door back down to the ground safely. If the cables fail while the door is on the ground, it is not as scary, but the door will still not be operational. Here are some questions to help you determine the problem.
- Are the cables tight when both open and closed?
- Are the cables wrapped neatly around the drum or is it loose and wrapped around the drum/tube?
- Are you able to mainly lift the door when disengaged from the motor?
*See Spring repair page for diagnosis tips as that may be the source of the problem. *
The cables & the springs work together to do all the heavy lifting of the garage door. Without both parts working properly in tandem, then your door will not be operational.
What Are Garage Door Cables?
Garage door cables are essential part of the counterbalance system. We often call them the arms & hands of the garage door. They work in tandem with the springs (aka the muscle) to raise and lower your garage door. There are variety of reasons why the cables on your door may fail. Most often it is a combination of any of the reasons listed below
- Thinner & weaker gauge cables were in use to begin with
- General wear & tear
- Improperly installed door system that resulted in rubbing/fraying
- An obstruction in opening or closing can cause an already weak cable to fail
